Switzerland: Lucerne
TravelPage.com Rating:
Approximately an hour train ride from Zurich is the
storybook town of Lucerne. Located on the shores of a Lake by the same name,
Lucerne is an ideal location for day trips to both the surrounding mountains and
the towns situated on the lake. In Lucerne itself, walking tours are the best
way to see the sights and any tour would be incomplete without a visit to the
old Chapel Bridge which was originally built in the 1300's. Other sights in
Lucerne, include a number of beautiful churches and the remnants of the ancient
wall and towers that used to protect the city. If you want to see the
mountains, we encourage you to take the train and visit either Mt. Pilatus or
Mt. Titlis. On our trip to Mt. Titlis we took the cable car to the top and went
from 75 degree temperatures at the bottom, to ice caves at the top. If you feel
up for some exercise, a walk down from the top to one of the lower cable car
stations lets you take in some really breathtaking views.
Another great day trip is a ride aboard one of the old steam paddleboats from the SGV-Company (Lake Lucerne Navigation Company). We recommend going on one of the older boats (the oldest one was built in 1901) and just taking your time. Any of the small towns along the way will have a nice restaurant for lunch or you can pick up a picnic in town before you leave.
When in Lucerne we stay at the
Chateau Guetsch, located on a hill overlooking the
city. Accessible by a winding road or a private cog railway, this hotel has a
very good (although expensive) restaurant and a great view. Most of the time
though, you can get a great meal in town at one of the local restaurants for a
very reasonable price.
The easiest way to get to Lucerne is to fly into Zurich and
then take a train from the airport. For additional information about Lucerne,
and Switzerland in general, contact the Embassy of Switzerland, Cathedral Ave.
