Switzerland: Lucerne - Hotel Château Gütsch
TravelPage.com Rating:
A hotel or residence has been at this location for over 100 years. Queen Victoria visited around the turn of the century and Pablo Casals was a guest. With spectacular panoramic view over the historic city of Lucerne, the Vierwaldstätter lake and the mountains, this has to be one of the most beautiful locations for any hotel anywhere. The castle was built in 1888 by the architect Emil Vogt as a private residence with connecting hotel and restaurant facilities. The architecture of the hotel was inspired by the Bavarian castle Neuschwanstein as Vogt sought to create a true fairytale Belle-Epoque palace.
Since 1989 the Hotel Château Gütsch has been run by the Glanzmann family of Lucerne, and was extensively renovated in 1992. The hotel provides an atmosphere rich in history as you pass through the hotel's magnificent halls and examine the traditional vaults and antiques. Most rooms overlook the city and the view is unmatched (don't forget your camera). A private, cog-railway takes you 1600 feet up the hill to thehotel which looks like a small white castle protecting the sleepy city below. Since it was renovated in 1992, the hotel has lost a bit of its quirky charm - the trade-off being a marked improvement and modernization in facilities.
There are only 31 rooms,
each one decorated in the theme of a famous person, and almost all have excellent views.
There is also a surprisingly large swimming pool where you can definitely swim
laps and even get a tan during the summer.
There hotel has a very nice (...and pricey) "Château Gütsch" restaurant where Alsatian chef Marc Zimmermann celebrates refined international cuisine. This main restaurant has an outdoor patio overlooking the city and is definitely worth the price if you happen to be staying there during the summer. Food is also available in the less formal speciality restaurant "1001-Nacht" and the "Art-Café-Bar".
While in Lucerne, make sure you take a boat trip on Lake Lucerne on one of the restored old steam paddleboats from the SGV-Company (041 367 67 67).
Room prices range from around $180 per night to well over $250 depending on season and location. Amex, Diners Club, Visa accepted.
