North America: Massachusetts, Sandwich - Dan'l Webster Inn
TravelPage.com Rating:
Review by Margaret Pearson, TravelPage.com Contributing Editor
Currier and Ives Picture Comes Alive
Picture yourself standing in a Currier and Ives town surrounded by old church steeples and a gristmill set on the most picturesque pond at the end of Main street. The Daniel Webster Inn is set right on Main Street which is so quiet that at night you feel like you are in some remote part of the country.
There is a main building which includes the majority of the guest rooms, restaurants and bar. Set in front and to the right side is the original inn which has also been re-done inside and is magnificently preserved. All rooms are done in a traditional New England theme with four poster beds and mahogany furniture which I found elegant but could be dressed down a little. Bathrooms have wonderful Aloe soaps, shampoos, dyers and rooms have ironing boards and everything to make your stay comfortable.
I stayed in a room on a wing of the main building next to the main air conditioning unit and it was
sort of noisy and would not recommend this area of the hotel in the summer. Some rooms have fire places which are probably very cozy in the winter, whirlpool tubs and heated marble floors.
This is a full-service inn with 54 guestrooms, an old-fashioned tavern, an informal dining room with a large fireplace, and a formal dining room with a glass wall looking into an enclosed courtyard and garden. The tavern food focuses on tasty appetizers, a variety of salads, burgers, sandwiches, and,
in the evening, a number of entrees, while the emphasis in the more formal
restaurant is on fresh seafood.
Prices range from $119–$349 for a double room to $230–$425 for a suite.
If you want to experience old Cape Cod and the sense of tradition, then staying at this inn will bring you back in time. The nearest beach is Sandy Neck and is a five minute drive from Sandwich town center. Route 6A is a must drive for anyone visiting the Cape because it is full of weathered-shingle
homes, intriguing shops and beautifully preserved marshlands, cranberry bogs and woodlands. Sandwich is an ideal place to unwind and to let the magic of its unspoiled beauty and history rejuvenate the spirit.
